Compassionate Pet Care

Canine Wellness Care

Our canine companions have distinctive needs when it comes to wellness and preventive care that begins as a puppy and continues on through their senior years. For example, did you know that unlike cats, dogs are omnivores? This means they can eat and remain healthy on both animal and plant-based foods!

Since dogs come in all shapes and sizes, your furry family member might have specific needs that pertain to their breed. We will recommend specific and individualized care for pets based on breed, lifestyle, and their stage in life.

Puppy Care

Within the first year of a dog’s life, we recommend:

  • Vaccines and boosters depending on lifestyle
  • Preventive care checkup
  • Spaying or neutering
  • Intestinal Parasite testing
  • Flea, tick and heartworm prevention year round

Adult Dog Care

For continuing wellness into a dog’s adulthood, we recommend:

  • Vaccines
  • Nutritional assessment
  • Parasite prevention
  • Behavior consultations
  • Dental care
  • Intestinal parasite testing

Senior Dog Care

Senior dogs should get all the adult care and routine labs to let us know when we might need to intervene on certain senior dog disease issues. We recommend these labs for senior dogs:

  • Blood cell count
  • Blood chemistry
  • Urinalysis
  • Thyroid testing

Furthermore, we check on both arthritis and mobility management and assess your senior pet’s nutrition regimen, as their dietary needs change when they grow older.

Canine Services Pricing

To establish care, all pets need to be seen by the doctor for a physical exam. During this, your pet gets a nose to tail evaluation that can help identify any issues before they become a serious problem. In addition, we discuss husbandry, identify any lifestyle risks, discuss nutrition and infectious disease prevention.

  • Wellness exam - $90
  • Illness exam - $100
  • Recheck visits - $52.75
  • Technician appointments (for nail trims, vaccines without the doctor, anal glands, etc) - $37.50

Puppy Services Pricing

  • Distemper, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza and Hepatitis vaccine (DHPP) - $41.65 - This is a core vaccine recommended for all dogs, regardless of age or lifestyle. All of these viruses cause significant disease and can be fatal, which is why its so important to vaccinate throughout their life. This vaccine is very safe and is recommended to start at 8 weeks of age.
  • Rabies vaccine- $40.20 - Rabies vaccination is an incredibly important part of canine wellness, for both indoor and outdoor pets. If infected, there is no cure and can easily be transmissible to humans via saliva and blood. From a human health perspective, this is the most important vaccine that we utilize.
  • Leptospirosis vaccine - $46.83 - Leptospirosis is a bacterium that is spread via urine of infected animals, oftentimes from wild animals. Because it can live and multiply in standing water, it's a particular issue in the Pacific Northwest and therefore considered a core vaccine. It causes liver and kidney damage and is also contagious to people. The vaccine is very safe and effective.
  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough) - $50.72 - Bordetella bronchiseptica is a bacterium that is spread via respiratory droplets of infected dogs and can infect cats as well. It can range from slight coughing or progress to pneumonia which can require hospitalization and IV antibiotics to treat. Because this vaccine is very safe and disease is extremely contagious, we recommend it for all dogs.
  • Canine Influenza Virus - $64.90 - This is a respiratory disease of dogs that can be fatal and occasionally pops up in shelters in the area. We recommend this vaccine if you plan on having your dog in places that dogs congregate such as boarding facilities, grooming salons, daycare, training classes or dog parks.
  • Intestinal parasite screening - $108.43 - Intestinal parasites are a common and easily overlooked cause of disease of puppies. Some types of worms (roundworms and hookworms for example) will infect humans and cause serious disease. For this reason, we recommend testing and regular deworming throughout the year, but especially if you bring a new puppy home.
  • 4dx testing (Heartworm, Lyme, Anaplasma and Tick Fever) - $79.96 - This test is for infectious diseases that are spread via mosquitos and ticks. We recommend testing once a puppy reaches 7 months old and then annually thereafter. Testing is required annually to be on heartworm prevention.
  • Flea, tick and heartworm prevention (price varies depending on weight and age) - $48-$55/month - We recommend year-round parasite prevention for all dogs. Fleas are not just a nuisance; they carry many easily preventable diseases like tapeworms and Bartonellosis to name a few. Ticks carry infectious diseases like Lyme Disease, Tick Fever, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, which can be transmitted to humans. Heartworms are spread by mosquitos, and if left untreated is often fatal and requires difficult, expensive treatment. Prevention is key!

*A word on when to spay or neuter your pet:

There is a LOT of information out there on the internet about when to spay and neuter, and your breeder may also have thoughts on this as well. In general, if your pet will be less than 50 lbs at their adult weight, it makes sense to spay and neuter them early. When young, dogs recover so well from surgery, and the risk of complications is much lower. However, for some breeds (and especially larger breeds) it makes sense to spay and neuter later in life. We will happily discuss all of this in detail with you at your appointment.

Young Adult Maintenance Care (Ages 1-5) Pricing

Dogs are great at hiding when they have issues. This is why every dog, regardless of lifestyle, should be examined every year to monitor their health. Things can change so rapidly even at a young age, that we want to catch issues before they become a serious problem. At this age, it is important to monitor weight, dental health and behavioral changes and will give you recommendations on nutrition based on exam findings. This is all in addition to the physical exam which checks every major body system for issues.

A typical wellness exam recommendation would look like this:

  • Wellness exam - $90
  • DHPP booster (if done alone) - $41.65
  • DHPP+Leptospirosis booster - $52.45
  • Rabies booster - $40.20
  • Bordetella annual booster - $50.72
  • Leptospirosis annual booster (if done alone) – $46.83
  • Canine Influenza annual booster - $64.90
  • Flea, tick and heartworm prevention (recommended year-round) - $48-55/month
  • Young wellness labwork package (CBC, small chemistry, and annual fecal exam) - $213.50

Mature Adult Pricing

Determining when your pet becomes a mature adult vs a senior can be a little tricky as it depends a lot on breed and size. A mature adult is considered a dog that has reached physical maturation, up until the remaining last 25% of its lifespan is left. It is recommended that Mature Adults are examined annually.

The exact age varies significantly by breed and size, as smaller dogs live longer than larger breeds:

  • Small breeds (up to 20 lbs): Mature adult stage spans ages 5–11
  • Medium breeds (21-50 lbs): Mature adult stage spans ages 4–9
  • Large breeds (51-100 lbs): Mature adult stage spans ages 3–8
  • Giant breeds (over 100 lbs): Mature adult stage spans ages 3–6

Vaccines as listed above

  • 4dx testing (Heartworm, Lyme, Tick Fever and Anaplasmosis) - $79.96
  • Annual Labwork (chemistry, blood cell count, thyroid, urinalysis, fecal exam) - ranges from $344.05 to $391.85 depending on health status.
  • Labwork is an incredibly important way we can detect disease before your pet becomes symptomatic. If addressed early, we can potentially start treatment before they become sick, and even give them a longer and better quality of life than they would have otherwise had. Our senior labwork package includes a fecal exam as well.

Senior Wellness Care

A dog is considered a senior when it has reached the last 25% of its lifespan. During this time, many things change and they can change quickly. This is why it's important to bring your pet in for a physical exam every 6 months. The general timeline for when a pet is considered a senior is listed below:

  • Giant breeds (>100 lbs): 4 to 5 years old
  • Large breeds (50–100 lbs): 5 to 6 years old
  • Medium breeds (20–50 lbs): 7 years old
  • Small breeds (<20 lbs): 9 to 11 years old

Preventive care recommendations stay the same as a mature adult, except for repeating physical exams and labwork every 6 months instead of annually. At these wellness visits, we pay attention to emerging issues like arthritis, cognitive changes, and hearing loss. We want to help your pet enjoy an exceptional quality of life throughout their golden years!
